Camping and Backpacking requirements

The following articles will help you decide what is important and what is not.......   as our news scouts are smaller in stature, we must think on what they can comfortably carry over a few miles at a time, and most importantly that the pack fits them well.   If not certain take the time to go to a specialist store like REI and get them to educate you and your scout on the right size pack... you don't have to buy their $400 pack though, or anything in the store.
NOTE: You may have to buy a youth size as a starter pack to cover the next 18 months. And secondhand packs are often available.

Unless you intend to take your boys on a week long hiking trip in future, there is no need for a pack bigger than approx 45-50 liters.
